AOTY #9: Lil Wayne – “Tha Carter V”
So much music dropped this year but probably the most important release of the year was us [finally] receiving “Tha Carter V” from Weezy. After many years of label issues and such with Birdman and Cash Money, Wayne was finally free from his contract and able to drop the much-anticipated album.
Not sure what to expect from the LP, overall the iconic emcee delivered. Stand-outs included the Swizz Beatz-produced “Uproar” which took off after it went viral for it’s dance on social media — “Dedicate” “Mona Lisa” featuring Kendrick Lamar, “Open Letter” “Dope Niggaz” “Hittas” and “Perfect Strangers.”
Other cuts sounded a bit dated and just not really what we wanted to hear on an album we deemed classic off just what it stands for and been through. It was also a little on the lengthy side [23 records] as well, which can make or break a album in today’s industry.
However, I have to give “Tha Carter V” that #9 spot just because it was an amazing moment in Hip-Hop, and we finally saw Wayne overcome all that label drama and be in a good space that he [and his fans] deserve.
